nothing beats the mission mountains
There are some sights in this world that are truly breathtaking, and I count the Mission Mountains as one of those sights. If you’ve ever driven US-93 North toward Polson, you understand the feeling that overtakes you when the massive mountain range comes into view, seemingly from nothing. I don’t know how to be poetic about it — the Missions are huge, awe inspiring, gorgeous, what else can I say!?
So to have a venue like Skyridge, where couples can begin their marriage with the Missions as their backdrop!? It’s insanely cool.
a gloomy morning
We woke up to a gloomy, raining morning in NW Montana but Robert and Mikayla couldn’t be bothered — they had a quiet morning getting ready with their closest friends, all leading up to a first look in front of the Missions + the bright afternoon sun.
Both Robert and Mikayla had slow mornings enjoying time with their bridesmaids and groomsmen. Robert chose a gorgeous vacation rental overlooking Flathead Lake in Bigfork, Montana and Mikayla spent her morning in a forest cabin in Ronan, Montana.
first look + private love letter reading
Robert and Mikayla’s original wedding plans were postponed a year thanks to Covid, so they actually got married in a small intimate ceremony a year before their larger celebration in Montana. Still, they wanted to be intentional about honoring their commitment and celebrating their partnership in a way that was just as special as their original plan. They opted for a “first look” before their re-commitment ceremony because Robert still hadn’t seen Mikayla’s traditional wedding dress — she wore a more casual sun dress the year before.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a first look with two people who had been married a year, but oh my gosh, these two had ME tearing up behind my camera. They both just melted into each other when they first saw one another.
After they collected themselves, Robert and Mikayla read each other personal love letters and it was the sweetest thing. I LOVE when couples choose to read love letters after their first look — you all know I’m a sucker for elopements, and it brings that intimate, intentional elopement energy to traditional weddings haha!
the ceremony
Robert and Mikayla’s ceremony was the freaking sweetest thing I’ve ever seen — their dear friend, Donovan, officiated and between his heart-centered words for the couple and the personal vows that R + M shared… there wasn’t a dry eye in attendance.
a reception to remember
We don’t do a ton of traditional weddings anymore, but I have to say — the ones we have been doing have had the most kickass, personal, FUN receptions ever. Robert’s brother, Leonard, wrote a song based on Robert + Mikayla’s vows and performed it — like whaatttt!? It was such a beautiful moment, and then after dinner the party went outside for drinks, lawn games, and the most crazy fun dance party we’ve ever had. After the sunset turned the Missions purple and we danced our hearts out, we capped everything off with a sparkler send off for the happy couple. Seriously, the most perfect summer wedding ever.
