Couple dancing in Oregon forest

Jess + Devin

Jess and Devin are two of the raddest people I’ve ever met — Jess is a Portland-based DJ and their wife Devin owns The Modern Minimalist, an amazing business offering holistic home organization + styling, in portland oregon + beyond. I was beyond inspired by the way these two move together, consider one another through looks and whispered words, and laughed over inside jokes they each recalled with just a glance. It was just an easy, beautiful shoot — storytelling with married love is my favorite. I think there’s so much beauty in comfort and stability and shared history. And, like, these two are hot haha — keep scrolling for their minimalist lifestyle couples session in a tiny cabin in Sandy, Oregon.

These two cracked me up, by the way — when asked if there was anything they weren’t comfortable photographing, they clarified that they didn’t want to lick each other’s faces — lmaoooo. Fair enough.

Tiny cabin in Oregon forest

I’m obsessedddd with this tiny cabin nestled in the forest in Sandy, Oregon — the old growth trees and ferns were so beautiful and the rain gave all the moody PNW vibes. The tiny cabin had an entire wall of windows that we jokingly said gave ~zoo exhibit~ haha!

Neutral couples outfit inspo

When it comes to choosing outfits for an indoor lifestyle couples photoshoot, neutral colors can be a great option. Neutral shades such as beige, white, gray, or black are timeless and versatile, creating a classic look. Wearing neutral outfits allows the focus to be on the couple and their connection rather than the clothes they are wearing. Additionally, neutral tones can easily complement different indoor settings and backdrops, such as a cozy living room or a minimalist bedroom. When selecting neutral outfits, it's essential to consider fit and texture. Experimenting with different fabrics and layering can add depth and interest to the overall look. By wearing neutral outfits, a couple can create a chic and effortless style that will look beautiful in photos and stand the test of time.

J + D chose a neutral color palette for their outfits. I love how they mixed tones + textures within the palette so they weren’t matching exactly, but still felt cohesive. For the outdoor portion of the shoot, they both opted for layers. When we moved inside, they chose more cozy and loose fits for sipping coffee and cuddling.

Planning a minimalist in-home lifestyle session

When it comes to planning a minimalist in-home lifestyle couples photo session, my focus tends to be on planning around an activity that reflects the couple’s lifestyle and interests so that the final photos and video looks and feels authentically THEM.

Beyond that, the focus is on storytelling, simplicity, natural light, and capturing the couple's authentic connection in their everyday environment — or how they typically move in their environment recreated in a cute Airbnb or hotel haha!

I try  to choose a room or a few areas in the home with ample natural light, such as a living room, bedroom, or kitchen — butttt playing with flash or harsh light can be a fun creative challenge too!

Minimalist props such as a favorite book or mug can add a personal touch to the photos without being distracting. When I say I like to plan around an activity, this can be as simple as sipping coffee if that is how you connect on Sunday mornings. I’ve had couples play cards in bed, make breakfast together, play board games on the floor, play records — the list goes on and on. It isn’t about being fancy at all!
