Where is Italy?

Italy is a country in southern Europe and is known for its infamous boot shape and the gorgeous water that surrounds it. Italy is famous for its architecture and ancient ruins while also having incredible landscapes and views.

How to get to Italy

How to get to Italy depends on where you’re coming from of course. If you’re from Europe, there are usually direct flights to most major airports in Italy such as the Fiumicino in Rome (FCO), Malpensa in Milan (MXP), and the Capodichino in Naples (NAP).

If you're coming from a further destination such as the US, you will most likely have a layover in the states before making the long flight over the Atlantic to your destination in Italy.

Once you arrive at your destination in Italy, you will need to make your way to your hotel or Airbnb. Some hotel’s will offer a pick up service, otherwise your options include taking a bus, taxi, or train.

How to Travel Around Italy

If you’re visiting major cities such as Rome, Venice, and Florence, one of the fastest options to get around is by train. Italy has an extensive network of trains that are very comfortable, efficient and allow you to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Driving yourself around Italy is also an option and there are many places available to rent cars. Choosing to rent a car also allows you to access places you wouldn’t be able to go by bus or train. However, there are some major differences about driving in Italy than in other countries. Automatic transmission cars are harder to come by in Italy so you might end up driving a manual or stick shift car. Italian cities are often crowded which can make it hard to find parking.

One of the best and cheapest options for getting around Italy would be to take the bus or getting a taxi or uber. Buses are the more reasonable way to get around Italy and Uber has gained popularity there which has made it a go-to way to get around.

I would recommend planning your elopement at least 1 year in advance before your date. This way you can coordinate with all of your vendors, including your photographer and videographer.

Legal Weddings vs. Symbolic Weddings in Italy

I would imagine that most of my clients are coming from the US and I would highly recommend getting legally married in the states and doing a symbolic wedding in Italy. A symbolic wedding doesn’t hold any legal significance but it allows for way more flexibility and for you to decide exactly how you want your day to go without having to stress the legality of it all.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Italy

What is the weather like in Italy?

Spring (April-May)

Italy in the spring has the most perfect, mild temperatures that are perfect for running around Italy. The spring provides everything the summer months do, just without the summer crowds.

Summer (June-August)

Summer in Italy is typically hot and dry. Summer definitely attracts the crowds but it can be the perfect time for beach ceremonies if that's what ur imagining for your perfect elopement.

Fall (September-November)

Fall in Italy has mild temperatures and is the perfect time for smaller crowds of people with the beautiful weather. Olive’s are also being harvested during this time which would make for an epic backdrop to your adventures.

Winter (December-February)

You can expect some snow in the northern regions of Italy, especially in the mountains, but other than that Italy doesn't get too cold in the winter. Winter allows you to escape the crowds because it is Italy's slow season for tourism which is so nice. If you're trying to keep expenses down for your elopement, accommodations in the winter are typically much cheaper.

When is the best time to elope in Italy?

Spring and Fall are my top picks for Italy. It's not too hot and there aren't as many tourists to worry about. Spring is also a great time of year because everything has just started to bloom. Pictures in front of a field of blooming flowers in Italy, I'm so in.

Location/Venue

Where you want to elope in Italy and what season to do it all depends on what you're looking for. Most venues are open year round but prices do usually vary on the time of year. The summer is when prices are typically higher while winter is when they drop.

Activities

If you're ready to hit the slopes in Italy, winter in the Dolomites would be perfect for you. If hikes and exploring the countryside or city is what you’re after, the fall and spring would be perfect with its mild temperatures. If laying out on the beach is more your vibe and you don’t mind the crowds, summer is the perfect time in Italy for you. It all just depends on what you want your trip to look like.

Crowds

Summer is tourist season for Italy and you’ll expect to see the streets crowded and places harder to get into. If you want your elopement to be more intimate, choosing a less busy season or finding less touristy venues are the perfect way to make that happen.

Travel Costs

You can probably sense a theme, but summer also raises the prices of flights and accommodations in Italy. To get the best prices, you should try and book your flights 5-6 months in advance and any other accommodations as early as possible.
