Full Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline Wedding Guide | Glacier National Park Photographer and Videographer
Introduction
Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline is one of my favorite ceremony spots on the west side of Glacier. You get the classic Lake McDonald foreground with mountain layers stacked behind it and you don’t have to drive far into the park to get it. It’s close to the west entrance, parking is easy, and the shoreline has plenty of room to spread out without feeling cramped. As a story-driven photographer and videographer with a vlog meets indie film style, I love this spot because the light hits the water in a way that makes both photo and video look clean and cinematic. It works for tiny ceremonies and slightly bigger ones, and it’s straightforward for guests who are coming in from out of town. If you want something simple, beautiful, and easy to access, this shoreline is one of the best choices on the west side.

How to Drive to Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline
Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline is accessed from the Apgar area near Lake McDonald, close to the West Glacier entrance.
Enter Glacier National Park through the West Entrance. After you pass the entrance station, stay on the main road toward Apgar. You’re heading toward Apgar Village and Apgar Campground.
For this location, the easiest parking reference point is Apgar Campground. Park there, then walk down to the shoreline from that area. It’s a short walk and once you’re on the water it opens up fast.
A few quick tips:
Pull up directions before you enter the park. Cell service is unreliable once you’re inside.
Parking can get busy in summer, especially midday. Arrive early or go later in the evening if you want more space.
Dress for lake weather. Even on warm days it can feel cooler by the water, especially if there’s wind.
Why Should You Elope at Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline
Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline is a killer choice if you want a simple ceremony with Lake McDonald right in front of you. You get water, mountains, and that iconic Glacier backdrop without hiking for it, and the shoreline makes portraits easy and gorgeous.
It’s also one of the easiest elopement locations in Glacier to pull off without turning the day into a whole production. You’re close to the West Glacier entrance, close to lodging and food in West Glacier and Columbia Falls, and you can build a relaxed timeline around Lake McDonald, the docks, and a few nearby stops along the road.
Crowds exist because it’s the west side of Glacier, but the shoreline gives you space to spread out. Sunrise and evenings are the best times if you want fewer people around. If you want hiking built into the day, you’re also close to tons of trail options, from easy shoreline walks to bigger hikes like Avalanche Lake.

Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline Wedding & Elopement Permits
If you’re getting married at Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline, you will need a permit. Glacier National Park is strict about ceremonies, and the Special Use Permit is what gives you permission to hold a wedding or elopement at an approved location inside the park.
It can feel confusing the first time you look at the park rules, but it’s very doable once you understand what you’re applying for. This section breaks down what the permit covers, what the park allows, and how to get yours submitted correctly.
Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline Wedding Special Use Permit
A Special Use Permit is required for all weddings and elopements in Glacier National Park. The permit covers your ceremony location, your group size, and the time of day you are approved to be there.
What the permit allows and does not allow
The permit allows you to hold a small ceremony at Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline. You must stay within your approved area and group size. Glacier requires ceremonies to be simple and low impact. You cannot block public access, take over the shoreline, or interfere with other visitors. Decorations and setup need to stay minimal.
How far in advance to apply
Apply as early as possible. Glacier accepts applications up to one year in advance, and processing can take time. Summer dates book quickly, so don’t wait until the last minute.
Permit cost
Glacier National Park charges a fee for the Special Use Permit. The fee covers application review and administrative time.
Approved ceremony locations
You can only get married at designated ceremony sites. Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline is one of the approved locations, and your permit will only cover the exact location listed in your application.
Guest count limits
Guest counts are limited for shoreline ceremony sites. This location is best for small ceremonies. If you’re planning a bigger guest list, an amphitheater location is usually a better fit.
Parking rules
Parking is only allowed in designated areas. For this location, plan to park near Apgar Campground and walk down to the shoreline. No saving spots, no blocking traffic, no exceptions.
Park entry fees
Yes, you and your guests still need to pay regular Glacier National Park entry fees. The Special Use Permit does not include admission into the park.
How to get your permit
You’ll complete the wedding permit application through Glacier National Park, submit it with the fee, then wait for approval. Once approved, you’ll receive the official permit and should keep a copy with you on the day of your ceremony.
Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline Entry Fees & Passes
Glacier National Park requires an entrance pass for every vehicle entering the park. You can purchase this at the gate or online ahead of time. The pass covers seven consecutive days.
In addition to the entrance fee, the park often requires a vehicle reservation for the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor during peak summer. If your ceremony is during reservation season, you and your guests will need both an entrance pass and a vehicle reservation unless your Special Use Permit specifically states that it covers entry for the ceremony window.
It is important to plan ahead so your guests know exactly what they need before they arrive. Let them know to buy their passes early, arrive with time to spare, and expect checkpoints depending on the season.
How to Get Your Montana Marriage License
Getting your Montana marriage license is simple, and Flathead County is the easiest place to do it if you are getting married in Glacier National Park. The Flathead County Clerk of Court is in Kalispell, which is the main hub near the west entrance.
You and your partner will both need to appear in person at the Clerk of Court to get your license. Bring a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay the standard license fee. There is no waiting period in Montana, so you can get married the same day you pick it up. The license is valid anywhere in the state.
Most couples flying in for their elopement plan to get the license a day or two before the ceremony. The process usually takes less than thirty minutes. After the ceremony your officiant will sign the license and you will return it to the same office so your marriage can be officially recorded.
For couples traveling from out of state, Montana does not require residency. You only need to get the license in Montana and use it in Montana. This makes it easy to plan your Glacier National Park wedding without any extra steps.
The Best Time of Year to Get Married at Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline
Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline sits near Lake McDonald on the west side of Glacier, which makes it one of the more accessible locations in the park. Since it’s lower elevation, you’re not dealing with the harsh alpine conditions you get higher up, but weather still matters here a lot.
Weather
May and June are cooler and wetter, with a higher chance of rain and fog rolling off the lake. Mornings and evenings can be cold, even if the daytime is decent.
July and August are the warmest months and the most consistent for weather. Expect cooler temps near the water early and late in the day. Afternoon storms can happen, and wildfire smoke can become a factor later in summer.
September is one of the best months for this location. Cooler air, fewer storms, and often clearer skies. The main thing to plan for is cold evenings.
October through April is the winter season in Glacier. Snow, icy conditions, and limited park services. This shoreline can still be beautiful, but you’ll be cold!! :)
Crowds
This location is close to the entrance and Lake McDonald, so summer crowds are guaranteed. Midday is the busiest, especially in July and August. Sunrise and evenings are the best times if you want fewer people around, and weekdays are always better than weekends.
If your priority is privacy, timing matters more than season. A quiet weekday sunrise in August will feel calmer than a Saturday afternoon in September.

Final Tips for Eloping at Apgar Picnic Area Shoreline

Bring layers. Even when it’s warm in town, the lake can feel cold, windy, and damp.
Wear shoes you can walk on rocks in. The shoreline is uneven and slippery in spots.
Bring bear spray and know how to use it. Yes, even at Lake McDonald.
Screenshot directions before you enter the park. Cell service is unreliable.
Pack it in, pack it out. Keep the shoreline clean, and leave it exactly how you found it.
